Visitors to Jamnagar cannot
long remain oblivious to it’s princely
past. The magnificent Pratap vilas palace, in
a renaissance style with imposing domes,
the 16 th century Darbargadh palace with
a festival of stone sculpture,
the impressive Willingdon crescent, the Lakhota
island palace in 19th century Jamsarovar
lake with a museum inside, statutory
of famous cricketing prince Ranjit Sinhji,
numerous walled parks and gardens. Also worth
seeing are the Maqbara, the colourful
sculpture of Sonapuri and Jain temples in the
city center.The Lakhota lake in the
city, Khijadiya bird sanctuary 30 minutes
from the city, Kileshwar hill and Sasoi, Ranjit
Sagar and Khambaliya dams in about 1
hour radius of the city, are pretty
picnic and birdwatching spots.
Wonderful Wild Life
Jamnagar has distinction of creating the country’s
first Marine National Park spread over an area
of nearly 458 sq.kms. Here corals create fantasies in stone and
are the master builders of the Park.
One of the most threatened birds, the great Indian bustard finds
a refuge in certain pockets of protected areas. The world’s only
four-horned antelope, the chowsingha is found here in healthy
numbers. One of the largest herds of blackjacks grace the grasslands
of Velavadar and till recently Gujarat was the place where flamingos
nested in huge numbers. Dugong, a marine mammal which resembles
a seal, along with the rare Borolo species have found home in
the protected areas of the Marine National Park.
